Description

Book cover done for Marek Cardew. This one took a while I have to say, but I'm quite satisfied witht he results. I learned a lot with this piece, especially with regards to skin tones. Enjoy!

Really nice composition. I love the lighting.

The highlights on the female's chest look a bit weird/too yellow, especially near the right (her left) shoulder.

The outline of the blurred foliage in front of her dress has a weird blurred shadowy edge to it. I think it could be softened up a bit? Looks a bit harsh against the red. The blurred foliage on the left side looks perfect though.

Hand anatomy could use a bit of tweaking.

Thanks everyone for the nice welcome, appreciate it.

purplerose: Thanks for your constructive feedback. You have a point about the dress. Depth of field is something I'm still struggling with, I need to find a better balance I think. I'll definitely be practicing that aspect in the future.

Wow! Very impressive. My only comment is that I find the woman's face to dark (hidden in shadow) -- especially the left eye and left jaw.

Your portraiture is extraordinary, as ever. Lots of nice textures, too (hat, grass, skin, etc), though I have to ask: what's with the furry area on the lady's dress? :p Also enjoy the modulations in skintone throughout. Aside from the extreme foreground foliage (which might be easily fixed by darkening it up, so it doesn't appear cut out from the red dress), I only see a few minor tweaks, such as giving the woman's arms and hand a softer, less harshly planar appearance and her hips more thickness/depth near the edge.
Good work and excellent color choices.

Thanks again to everyone for the feedback.

chickenfingers: I'm glad you like the portraiture. I'm probably gonna do something new soon, I'm a bit bored of this whole realism thing to be honest. As for that furry area on the lady's dress, that's just an example of how horrid I am in adding patterns and such to clothing, lol. Very good points about those minor tweaks, you're dead on which pretty much everything. With that said, I appreciate the time you took to post the feedback, and I'm glad you like this image despite the flaws.

Nice painting man welcome to gfx. The composition is really strong. A couple crits i have for ya; the area above the girls left breast and left side of neck is too cool and green. The part between the collar bone and breast is roughly on the same angle as her cheeks so it should be the same or similar warm color, maybe a little lighter tho. As for the neck, since all your shadows are warm and the neck is slightly in shadow, it should be warm. The greenish color should primarily reflect on surfaces that face to the right in this lighting. Also the edge between Indy's Iris's and whites of the eye is too hard, it should be softened a little. And his left iris is too small.
Phew! The only reason i would crit something this much is because i think it is really awesome and i deserves a decent review! 9/9

The likeness and scene very realistic but in his face - and I already forgot what he looked like in the movie, but the scar seems a little to drastic on the right side, below the eye.

I might be wrong - I didn't pay much attention to the details in the movie,
The shading on his face stands out but she doesn't as much so, a little too dark but in the overall - minor.

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to post their feedback, it's always appreciated.

valentine9: Glad you dig the composition, it was fairly challenging making it work as a book cover. You have a point about the skin tones. Sometimes I take them too far, which was the case with this. For example, I consciously added a lot of green hues on the woman's skin, to contrast the red of the dress. Me being me, I went a bit too crazy with it I guess. Thanks for your review :)

nanno: I'll be honest, I'm not good with dress patterns and such, and I like to avoid those as much as possible. I think it would have worked better if I chose something more simple for her mid-section. It's a mistake I've learned from with this piece. Glad you like this piece regardless :)

rimete: Good point about the eye, looks like I completely missed that flaw. I think that's what happens if I work for an image to long, I get immune to the mistakes. I don't think I flipped it horizontally neither at any point, which was a big mistake on my part. Having said that, I'm glad you enjoy the piece despite the flaws mentioned.

razpna and sikikoy: Thank you.

Excellent work.

Wow, that's great!

My only critique would be that the background and overall color could be pushed more towards the orange/brown hues that are part of the Indiana Jones look.

Excellent work. Superb details and painting.
Lots of details here, so little flaws cannot be avoided. The most obvious is possibly the girl's arms that appear little plasticy, especially her left one.
Anyway, splendid altogether. Top mark from me.

Very nice. You very nearly catched harrison's look, but now it looks a bit that you don't have a license to use harrison ford. :) The left eye is better than the right eye. I would suggest that the right eye would be positioned a bit lower and that it would be tinily more broader. Also there is probably something differently in the lips (I'm guessing that it's the upper lip). I'm just trying to find it without references.. this is kind of funny, because I'm just going with my intuition here and try to keep the channel open.

Thank you.
